  1. Yes.  There are ports that can handle all types and size ships.  Others specialize in types of cargo, like oil, or containers.  Then there are ports that have few "facilities" like docks, warehouses, even  cranes to off load the cargo.  So, yes there is a wide range in Harbors for Big ships.

  4. Dude, think about it - a canoe can land anywhere, a speed boat needs deeper water and well now a cruise ship an not exactly cruise up to the show, or get pulled out of the water with a trailer now can it.

It is no good for a ship carrying timber to dock in  aquay where they handle containers, because they don't have the eqipment to unload timber. If a ship carrying Coal or iron ore needs a different berth to a timber ship, because you need to have conveyor belts to unload this cargo.
