Dude, think about it - a canoe can land anywhere, a speed boat needs deeper water and well now a cruise ship an not exactly cruise up to the show, or get pulled out of the water with a trailer now can it.

Because it depends on the type of cargo they have to discharge. It is no good for a ship carrying timber to dock in  aquay where they handle containers, because they don't have the eqipment to unload timber. If a ship carrying Coal or iron ore needs a different berth to a timber ship, because you need to have conveyor belts to unload this cargo.
