Why are there fewer players with non-English surnames in the AFL compared to 20-30 yrs ago?

By english I broadly include Scottish, Irish, Welsh and German.

By the way it couldnt simply be soccer cause there are more english surnames in the socceroos than 20-30 yrs ago too!

  1. Because during the 50's & 60's there was a lot of Italian, Greek and Eastern European people coming to Australia.  A lot of them settled in Melbourne (to start) and their families have grown up and have adopted Aussie football as their game of choice. Hence the non-Anglo Sax names now in evidence.
