Why are there grey buttons in a + shape on the env2?

on the left side of the keyboard...4 of the buttons are grey, in a plus shape. what is the reason for that? Ive always wondered..

  1. They are used as up, down, left, and right when your playing games. they're on the Voyager and other phones too
