I have watched the shelters and organizations, I was active in, either lose funding or the local cities placed ordinances on them to get rid of them.

Before the Super bowl came, our various politicians tried and succeeded with minimal opposition to get rid of several shelters in our downtown. We figured it was just to improve the local...make it look like we don't have a poverty issue.

They said that the presence of the shelters created a nuisance..and contributed to crime and loitering/camping in our downtown areas. When the shelters closed the loitering became worse...but ..several animal shelters opened some miles down the road and began pan handling/ fund raising for their causes.

I watched people doing their best to rescue dogs that were trying to attack rescue workers ...but ..during the same time..I watched people that would give for animals .. turn away & ridicule the special needs populations from Louisiana and Texas during the Katrina and Rita Storms.

  1. For the same reason why it's more disturbing to see acts of violence (real or fictional) towards animals than towards people. Our society has more love for pets than for our fellow human beings.
