First off, I know that there are many other chinese dialects, but these are the two I wanted to focus on. I noticed, for example, in chinese restaurants, malls, and generally in Chinatowns, there is a wider variety of cantonese speaking chinese people than mandarin speaking people.

Then again, I only live in one small city in one large country, so I could be mistaken....I guess I could be wrong....what are your thoughts?

  1. Honestly, when I go to Chinatowns, I usually meet more Chinese people who speak Mandarin! lol

  2. Immigrants came in waves and depending on where you live and when immigrants came, there might be more Mandarin or Cantonese speakers. It's usually a mix. I used to live in Montréal and there were more Cantonese speakers there.

  3. People from the south areas (Cantonese speakers) had more chances to interfere with foreigners and thus move abroad... so it's a general tendency most of Chinatowns use Cantonese rather than Mandarin
