Question:

Why are there more cloudy days in the winter?

Although it might be a misperception, it seems to me that there are much more cloudy days in winter than there are in spring, summer, and even fall. There just never seem to be that many sunny days; even on days when it isn't cold, or doesn't snow, it is often cloudy and dark. Why?

  1. This probably has something to do with condensation of water vapour into clouds. When it is sunny and hot out the water vapour is able to stay as water vapour more often because of the capacity that air has to hold a certain amount of the vapour. Once that threshold is exceeded clouds form and precipitation is formed. When it is cold the capacity of the air decreases so clouds are formed more often and with almost any water vapour in the air at all. It is dark obviously from sunlight being blocked by clouds
