  1. A number of reasons, if there is something big going on that day (i.e. a political official, etc) they will have forced overtime for some officers. Also, some departments will get federal money crack down on a certain crime (speeding, DUI's) and will have extra officers out in hopes to catch a violator. Also, sometimes you may think you see more officers because of the workload for that day. If there isnt much going on, you can bet you'll see alot more officers running radar.

  2. On holidays PD's put more police on the roads for the safety of the driving public. Also some PD's get grands from the state to pay the officers overtime for seat belt patrol and other violations. And some days it just the normal patrol, no one called in sick, and all the vacations are over. It as simple as that.

  3.   Manpower issues, other days officers may be tied up with training, court or just plain busy writing reports and conducting investigations.

  4. Why are there more people working at walmart at certain times?  The answer is the same.

  5. A lot of departments have been trying to come up with schedules that over lap Police coverage.  So during high call times (usually late afternoons into the evenings) departments try to schedule more of their Officer to work.  It is not necessarily certain days but certain hours.

  6. Because Big brother gave some the day off. Not all the cogs in the political machine we call Government can enforce their power on you all time. They have little repair shops where they can go home and rest their sprockets, sometimes their is more violators of the decree of big brother so the po po have to be out in force. Plus theirs more hooligans on Sunday and sat then the weekdays walking around. Its just a need based thing, or maybe the Donut shop closes early on tues.

  7. There is no one simple answer here.  I will try to touch on some of the large reasons:

Some days and times tend to be staffed more than others.  Certain days (holidays, special events) will be over staffed in anticipation of large calls and call volumes.

Some departments have 4 10 hour days per week.  In that case, there will be one day a week when shifts overlap.

On days with slower than normal call volumes, it will appear as though there are more police on patrol, as they will be 'out and about' instead of at a call, the jail, etc.

Hope that helps to answer your question.

  8. In some cases, it's just that it's a job and sometimes a few people take the day off.

In other cases, it's because of statistical analysis that states when certain crimes occur, such as increased roadblocks testing for alcohol on New Year's or St. Patty's day.

  9. They run low on coffee money.  (Probably not the real reason, but it is what I have always heard)!
