  1. Because air is 3 dimensional meaning that planes can go up, down, right left and altitudes can range from a few meters off the ground, to near space.  There would be no way you could mine the skies.

Mining the ground is possible because you are only placing mines just beneath the surface and in the water, you are also generally just placing mines close to the surface.

  2. they'd probably be very expensive to develop and difficult to use effectively. there's a whole lotta sky up there, and even large groups of planes only take up a very narrow corridor. much easier to use other ground/aircraft based weapon systems and targeting i'm sure.

the earth is one dimensional and all land troops and craft have to use it, but with planes, not only do they have no obstacles but they can be anywhere from 100 to 50,000 feet or more. air mines are just unfeasible.

  3. Blimps went out of style in WWII. It has to do with the Big Sky theory.

  4. There are sort of.

In WWII balloons were used to tangle up bombers on approaches to targets.

Today, there is a mine that detects helicopters above it and fires an explosive into the air at the helicopter.

It would be kind of expensive to have some type of flying mine.  Even if there was, it would not be able to stay airborne for long.

  5. That's a great idea!

  6. This is reality not a game on your PS2 or what ever game system you play with.
