Question:

Why are there people who do not tip? I mean, never tip, not just because of bad service.?

I've been responding about tipping, as I am a waitress. I have learned a few things from Yahoo Answers.

However, why do some people not tip at all? I mean, not just once but all the while. I know sometimes people forget, or the service was bad or whatever, but there are some people who just don't tip. Are you one of them? If so, why?

We get some at my place of work, and they usually get bad service, and the boss knows it. But as long as they are spending money at the restaurant, she doesn't care. Some waitresses "sneek" the tip into their bill, so that the customer doesn't know it, but I am an honest person and I can't do that.

So, if you are a non tipper, please let me know why. Most of us make a few bucks an hour for a wage.

  1. i always tip 20 percent if its bad i usually still tip at least 10 percent.  people who dont tip at all obviously have never had to waitress and have no idea how hard it is.

  2. If service is bad enough for me to have to involve a manager, that is the only time I will not tip.  Otherwise, I tip generously.  My Mother, on the other hand,  is a die-hard non-tipper and it is embarassing to dine out with her.  She chooses to not understand the point of paying more than your bill for your food.  Her argument is "If they don't like their job, they should go to college or get a real job!"

  3. amen to this question. i too am a server and am very interested in why people dont tip or tip poorly even though service was awesome. i dont think unfortunately taht a non tipper is going to come in here and answer.

i make 3.50 an hour and tip out 3.5% of my sales each night.. its a tough job.

  4. First of all GOOD FOR YOU! for not "sneaking" in the tip. That is wrong and im glad you are better than that. I think some people are just cheap and they probably dont know how hard it is to be a waitress.

I for one make sure I tip at least 15% unless the service is really bad. I just dont want to be rude and the person was WAITING on me. They got what I wanted and were nice about it and I know its hard to have people bug you for things all the time so I make sure that I tip as well as I can afford. And if I get REALLY good service I call that place and put in a good word for them.

  5. Speaking "from your side of the fence," so to speak, some people are ignorant of basic customs here, and some know better but expect something for nothing.

One infamous customer brought her 7 children into the restaurant every Friday night with a coupon for a 99-cent kid's meal (the restaurant published the coupon frequently and it was supposedly limited to one child with purchase of one adult dinner), ordered 7 kid-meals and a cup of coffee (expecting at least 3 free refills).  She'd tie up a waitress's time for at least an hour to an hour & a half -- crackers while the kids waited for dinner, refill water, refill a soda, refill her coffee, make ice cream sundaes & send them back for more sprinkles!  With tax her bill came to less than $10, and she didn't so much as leave the waitress a penny for an hour or more of constant hard work, and another quarter-hour cleaning up after those da*n kids.  The oldest was about 8 or 9, and as rude and obnoxious and demanding as his mom.  The second time these jerks were seated at my station, I walked straight out.

  6. I often ponder this question as well.  However I get my sweet revenge by posting their names on the std.com website.  STD stands for sh***y tippers database.  The new % is 20.  For those who do not know.

  7. I'm a tipper, I know that is the other part of your salary...I usually give 20% of my check, but, if the service is really good I give more than 20%.  I do that because when my son was going to college in New Brunswick N. J. he was surviving on his tips alone.

  8. Talk to the boss and let him know what these other waitresses are doing.  Because the customers are wising up to this practice (which he condones) they know they are being ripped off so they don't pony up the tip.

A better solution would be to have the boss call a company meeting and put down in writing what his policy is for tipping. One example, a party of 6 or more would automatically pay a 15% gratuity.  I'm sure if you put your heads together, you can come up with some more ideas.  Good luck in you career of choice.  You may want to go to night school and take some courses in business or law.  You sound like a pretty smart cookie.

  9. Unfortunately, non-tippers come with the territory. You'd think they'd be embarrassed...but even if they don't tip you, they're still paying customers. There's not much your manager (or anyone) can do except grin and bear it.

What your co-workers are doing by adding to the bill is illegal, and they could get fired for doing it. Better to just enjoy your tipping customers more. They'll make up for the cheapskates

    :-)

  10. I always tip the waiter/waitress!

To be honest, some people are just plain cheap, that's why they don't tip. For instance, I ahve a cousin who I hate going out with because she NEVER tips. I asked her why and she said that it is because the wait person is getting paid anyway! I explained that they only get paid a couple of dollars per hour and that they really depend on those tips for the majority of their money! She said that she doesn't get tipped at work so why should she tip others! Meanwhile, she is not a waitress! I can't stand people like that!
