Why are there so many Loblaws stores shutting down ?

Oh yes....would it be a sign of the recession we are having ?

I haven't noticed them shutting down, but I do know that Loblaws, Independent Grocer, and The Real Canadian Superstore are all owned and run by the same company. All 3 have PC Financial Bank kiosks, and all 3 seem to carry similar products and brands such as "No Name."

Perhaps they are shutting down a Loblaws, but opening an Real Canadian Superstor in it's place?

Maybe having 3 of the same thing is getting out of hand for them, and they want to consilodate their companies into one huge super-company?

They're shutting down? I didn't know that! That sucks though. Maybe because No-frills is cheaper and everyone found out about that ;)

-- I was thinking that about Real Canadian but Independent? I always thought an Independent grocer was actually independent, not owned by Loblaws! This is crazy! Thanks for posting that.

I am not sure as to the precise reason, but I have noticed it as well, especially up here. I think its for the better however, as they always tend to have inferior produce, only a small selection in the bakery, not much marbling in their "choice cuts" of meat and then charge outrageous prices for their toiletries and every day items. Perhaps this has something to do with it. And the fact that they are a chain, owned by a corporation that owns other grocery chains as well, like the above poster stated. Perhaps this is the one that is not doing as well as the others.

Loblaws, SuperStore and No Frills are all owned by the same company.  What is happening is Loblaws are unionized so must pay employees fairly well.  No Frills and SuperStore are non-union and can pay minimum wage.. Sooooo Loblaws is converting many of their "Loblaw" stores to Superstore and No Frills to get around the union obligations.

Same her in BC where Save-On-Foods are shutting down and "Price Smart" (same company opens up again in same or nearby location

I don't know what you're talking about, a brand new Loblaws just opened up 2 blocks away from me about 3-4 months ago.
