  1. hi

  2. Absolutely for tax purposes.  Maine must have cheap "permanent" license plates and must not have taxes due on each trailer annually.

In Missouri, you see a lot of these with out of state license plates because they aren't required to register the trailers here.  Maine is one of the "regular" plates that we see.  If they did register the equipment in Missouri, each trailer (or truck) would be subject to "personal property tax" each year.  With a few hundred or a few thousand trucks, this adds up quickly to be a pretty big bill.

How can companies get away with this?  It is hard for State Tax authorities to prove that the business is intentionally avoiding taxes by doing this.  So, it usually goes on without being addressed because it is almost impossible to prove intent is to avoid taxes.

  3. The truck may be registered and licensed in Maine. The trailer may be licensed where ever they picked it up. Some trucks do what called "Hook and Drop" (I think that how it said). They just hook on to a trailer and take it somewhere, drop it and get another. They not have to wait around to be loaded or unloaded.

    But, I may be wrong.

  4. its for tax purposes, the trailer plates are different because most trailers are leased, and could be from anywhere
