There is one in San Lucas that the land alone must have cost a lot of money. Where do the funds come from to buy, build, and support these churches?

  1. Because they go on missions and most of the churches they build are with the money of their members, and those churches do not have much Guatemalan members, most of them are foreigners.

About what Regina told you about 90% of Christian Catholics, well let me tell you this:

About 70% of the population is Christian Catholic

about 20% of the population is Christian Protestant

the other 10% is for other religions

  2. Good question.... I thought Guatemala was like 90% Catholic! I'm curious to see the answer for this.

  3. The money comes from the general members' tithings and other contributions, real estate and other business dealings. The church is run like IBM: very organized and very businesslike.

As for Guatemala: There is a theory among some church historians (who haven't lost their job over it) that Guatemala was the original landfall of Lehi and his band of jewish proto-mormons. This is called the 'limited geography" theory of the actual extent of the adventures of Nephi found within the pages of the Book of Mormon, originally put forth by John Sorenson. So, maybe they want to be 'close to the action' as far as doctrine goes.

Real historians and archaeologists call this the "Horse's As$ Theory", or HAT, as a description of what Joseph Smth put his face into as he translated the Book of Mormon.

  4. And you think all our tithing goes to fund multi-million dollar penthouses for our prophet and apostles?

Think again!  I mean, where DOES the money come from?

  5. I can not tell you why there are so many LDS churches in Guatemala (though Mormons do go on missions to other countries to spread their religion), but I can tell you that ... oh, I know I'm going to get in trouble for this ... but most of the Mormons I know, actually tithe to their church. The church in general is very well run, and is famous for taking care of their own ... money begets money and therefore the church can purchase land and build more churches relatively easily.
