Why are there so many basements in Denver?

I'm from GA, but I visited Denver recently, and noticed that most of the homes and establishments there were built on basements. Why? I could understand if the buildings were on a hill or something but they were on flat ground.

  1. In my area (right next to denver) the basements are usually built to have room to put like pool table or swimming pool and bar. another reason is that basements are the safest places in ur home so y not built one?

  2. The reason for basements in colder climates is that the foundation should extend below the frost line.  In some areas the ground can freeze down 4 feet or more.  So might as well make it tall enough to stand up and use it for something.

One year in Upper Michigan when Lake Superior froze over, water pipes 8 ft underground froze.  Although, normally snow cover would somewhat insulate the ground.

  3. It also adds a nice large area to your home, where the family can hang out and play pool, ping pong or whatever, during those long snowy winters. Or when the neighborhood kids come over, the parents can say, "why don't you guys go down to the basement, and stop bothering us!" Parents love homes with basements!

    Good Luck,  ;-)
