  1. 1. Depth to play the matchups.

    2. Depth to cover injuries.

    3. Depth for bye weeks.

Some leagues go over the top with the actual number of bench spots.

A deeper bench (more spots) can be favorable to making more trades.  A manager can speculate more without gutting his or her roster.  It's a way of encouraging trades and promoting roster flexibility.

  2. people get hurt a lot in football, and theres byes, so they need to give you a good amount of backups

  3. If it's a custom league, the commisioner chooses how many. I'm in a few leagues, say if there are 10 different starter positions, there should be 8 or more bench positions. There are bye weeks, injuries, and guys that simply don't perform. You need backups.

  4. Because there are bye weeks and people get injured.  The league manager can also change the amount of bench spots there are.  In our league we add more because there really isn't enough.
