Why are there so many fewer spiders around Chicago this summer?

I read in another post that there are orb weaver spiders all over the city of Chicago, that tend to come out more in July and August. In past years, I have noticed lots of them by now, but this year there are barely any. Why the change in population?

maybe their food source is scarce, but either way you should just be glad there aren't swarms of spiders around, I wish the ones around me would go away
