Why are there so many old style VW Beatles in Mexico?

And to think they are now a collector item in the United States.

  1. VW does have a plant in Puebla but they no longer make the VW Beetle.  It has been out of production for about four years.  However, the cars are relatively inexpensive (a new one was about $6,500) and every mechanic can repair one.  Many taxis will have to be replaced in Mexico City, Taxco (with narrow, steep streets) and other cities in Mexico.

  4. There are many poor people in Mexico.  Those old beatles are cheap, easy to repair, and they run forever.

  5. Volkswagen has a plant there that makes them.  The only auto plant in the world that still does.

    Why?  Because Mexicans still buy them.
