Why are there so many pawn shops in Texas?

I've recently moved to Texas and am struck with the density of pawn shops. There are so many! Why is that? Is there something about the history of Texas that can explain this? Does Texas financial law support it? Is it part of Mexican culture that Texas inherited?

  1. Most of them are chains. I think you are correct when you say that it is somewhat cultural when you consider the amount of Latinos that live here. Many of them are unwilling or can't afford themselves of the normal financial institutions in this country.

Most pawn shops aren't asking a lot of questions where someone got the 'stuff' from.

Sorry people don't think Latinos frequent them because I go to them all the time and Spanish would sure be handy to know.

  2. HI Joe,

Not part of the Mexican culture.   Pawn shops are BIG business in Texas as well as in other states.

  3. 'cuz crackheads need someplace to get money

  4. hahaha   yeah  but, i don't konow what's a pawn shop ....

    :(

  5. Pawn shops have been around for a long time in texas way before the influx of immigrants.  As a matter of fact, pawn shops stem far back into the colonial days when it was used as a source of credit.
