Question:

Why are there so many wasp-like insects in the garden all of a sudden?

They are narrow but not segmented. They are flying all around the vegetables etc. It has been very hot here. I don't think there is a nest near the house. I don't want to spray as I understand some wasp like insects feed on aphids etc. Any ideas on why so many all of a sudden?

  1. the season is ending.... workers are hard at it to find foods to finish up their work.... hornets and wasps are now looking for more than just flower food since there's fewer nectar flowers just now....... protein is big for them now.... I went fishing with shrimp the other day and had to share  some on one of the piers or I couldn't have gotten any fishing done!....this is the time when they'll land right on your hamburger if you're picnicing!!.... a couple good frosts will put a stop to their searching, but in  the meantime, with fewer flowers blooming, their need for food is big..... around here, they're at the hummingbird feeders constantly now.....

  2. If it has been raining and hot, they come around searching for liquid to drink.  Also, sounds like yellow jackets.  Put out a couple of jars with honeyed water or wine bottles with just alittle wine.  This should catch them.

  3. Wasp bee like tall grass or weed. They make holes underground.

You should spray wasp thing, when they are not busy like when I sprayed on them they will fly away but it will come back.

when wasp is calm down go close to area and spray them with orthed brand. then it will kill wasp bee.

P.S. Do not spray in morning or afternoon.

  4. Some wasps develop nests underground, in abandoned squirrel holes and stuff. You may have a sizeable nest nearby and not even know it. I found a wasps nest in a hole in my lawn one time when I was mowing the lawn. When I got near it, the vibration from the mower drove them out (yes, I got stung).

I also had a swarm of wasps invade a squirrel hole in my backyard once. And, I was really concerned, because I had a toy fox terrier who liked to dig in the yard. At night, when they had all returned to the nest, I sprayed a bunch of wasp spray down the hole and sealed it with a rag soaked with the spray. For about 2 days, I could hear the buzzing coming from underneath the soil. Fortunately, my dog never got curious enough to investigate before they died.

  5. Just enjoy the inevitable decline of pests.  It is likely that their larvae have hatched and you have 'toddlers' in your yard.  I have lots of wasps in my yard, coupled with yellow jackets that live in a hole right by my patio.  But I have no other insects in the yard.  It's a wonderful thing!
