Question:

Why are there sometimes red reflectors in the shoulder pavement on the interstate?

I understand that there are raised pavement markers delineating the centerline and gore areas for on / off ramps, but I have recently noticed red markers placed randomly in the shoulders on the interstates. I am wondering what these signify?

  1. There are 3 basic types, round, rectangular and flexible (temporary) raised markers...The marker colors have the same definition as painted lines...The round marker usually defines the line...The rectangular marker is usually placed at the front of the line with the white reflector facing oncoming traffic...On the back side (facing away from traffic) of the rectangular marker, there may be a different color, usually red, and this signifies Wrong Way or Do Not Enter...You can see this on undivided multilane highways.

  2. This is all that I could fine, hope it helps.

    (1) to reduce travel, particularly by the heavier vehicles, on shoulders of lesser structural capacity than the adjacent pavement.

    (2) to make driving more comfortable, particularly at night and during inclement weather, by providing a continuous guide for the driver.

    (3) to reduce accidents.

  3. colored reflectors often point out . fire hydrants and emergency phones

  4. Some can show that rigid barriers are there or soft shoulders or steep shoulder drop offs.

  5. It would be some kind of hazard. You have to find it yourself.

  6. If the red reflectors you are asking about are on poles about 4 feet high and there are two reflectors on each pole set at about 45 degree angles to each other,  they are designed to frighten deer away from the highway.

Your headlights shine on the reflector and startle the deer so they won't cross the road at that moment.  Once you have passed, the reflectors no long "shine" and the deer will proceed across the road.  They have been quite effective in the Midwest of the US and here in Washington State.

Anytime you see a row of red reflectors alongside the highway, keep your eyes open for deer, even during daylight hours.
