"Recent arrests of police officers in El Salvador accused of committing extrajudicial executions have encouraged human rights activists and experts who have long reported the continued existence of death squads in this Central American country."

"Four other police officers were arrested Aug. 27 in the eastern department of San Miguel in connection with the group headed by Arriaza, and were charged with belonging to a death squad."

"But although a 1992 peace agreement put an end to the civil war, El Salvador still has one of the highest homicide rates in the world: 56 per 100,000 population in 2006, according to the Institute of Forensic Medicine"

  1. its really sad but the government, especially now with the gang problems that have plagued the country, isnt perfect and despite all the efforts to make it seem all peaceful and as if the government is trying to look out for the people i highly doubt that el salvador has really stopped sending soldiers to the school of the americas...its really hard to transition from an almost army run country that had such a brutal civil war to a so called democracy

  2. uncivilized places will have death squads.

  3. 1992 is still not to long ago, these people got accostumed to violenece. There are still alot of guerrilleros and military that don't care to go out and kill because they were taught that at an early age. I love alot of things about el salvador, I just hope just like US sent lots of "pisto" ($$$) to continue the war they'll send some help to have a safer country.
