  1. None of the above. In fact, as Thomas Jefferson among others noted, Indian "tribe" was a highly subjective term and some were just a handful of folks. Some tribes numbered in the hundreds or thousands. Others were only 50 or 60 or so. Then, you had large tribes that were, for many reasons, identified with a confederation, especially in the mid-Atlantic area.

    Climate of course may have had something to do with the proliferation of tribes, large and small, as would mores. My guess is that topography had more to do with it than climate. Good question.

  3. there were more tribes before the Europeans killed them all off in attempted genecide..many tribes were totally exterminated

  4. There was no infrastucture.

    Most tribes, in the early days, didn't even know of each others existence. When some of these tribes met for the first time, with no info about each other, their first thought was to attack., which made them more insulated.

    It is difficult to understand, today, that in those days a half hour car ride today was further than most people then travelled in their lifetime.
