Actually, you are right, there are 2 sets in the bible.  I don't know why.

  7. I think you have your chapters confused.

Here is Torah portion 10-27 of Exodus.  It is quite obvious that this is the time that Hashem instructed Moses of all the rules...the commandments and told him to bring them down and give them to the people.

The 10 commandments were written down on two tablets.  After 40 days and 40 nights, Moses brought the tablets down from the mountain to give to the people.  However, the Israelites sank to the depravity of worshipping a golden calf when Moses, their leader, did not return when expected.

Moses became enraged by the Israelites' idolatry, and he smashed the tablets, written by the finger of G-d, to smithereens. At the same time, the great prophet-leader of his people beseeched G-d to forgive the errant tribes, and caused the Almighty to present a second set of tablets replacing the first.

    And it is written:

34:10 G-d said: I will make a covenant before all your people, and will do miracles that have never been brought into existence in all the world, among any nation. All the people among whom you [dwell] will see how fearsome are the deeds that I, G-d, am doing with you.

34:11 Be very careful with regard to what I am instructing you today. I will drive the Amorites, Canaanites, Hivites, Perizzites, Hittites and Yebusites out before you.

34:12 Be most careful not to make a treaty with the people who live in the land where you are coming, since they can be a fatal trap to you.

34:13 You must shatter their altars, break down their sacred pillars, and cut down their Asherah trees.

34:14 Do not bow down to any other god, for G-d is known as one who demands exclusive worship, and He does indeed demand it.

34:15 [Be careful] that you not make a treaty with [the people] who live in the land. When they practice their religion and sacrifice to their gods, they will invite you, and you will end up eating their sacrifice.

34:16 You will then allow their daughters to marry your sons, and when their daughters worship their gods, they will lead your sons to follow their religion.

34:17 Do not make any cast metal idols.

34:18 Keep the Festival of Matzahs. Eat matzahs for seven days as I commanded, in the designated time in the month of standing grain. It was in the month of standing grain that you left Egypt.

34:19 The first-born initiating every womb is Mine. Among all your livestock, you must separate out the males of the first-born cattle and sheep.

34:20 The first-born of a donkey must be redeemed with a sheep, and if it is not redeemed, you must decapitate it. You must [also] redeem every first-born among your sons.

Do not appear before Me empty-handed.

34:21 You may work during the six weekdays, but on Saturday, you must stop working, ceasing from all plowing and reaping.

34:22 Keep the Festival of Shavuoth through the first fruits of your wheat harvest. Also keep the Harvest Festival soon after the year changes.

34:23 Three times each year, all your males shall thus present themselves before G-d the Master, Lord of Israel.

34:24 When I expel the other nations before you and extend your boundaries, no one will be envious of your land when you go to be seen in G-d's presence three times each year.

34:25 Do not slaughter the Passover sacrifice with leaven in your possession. Do not allow the Passover sacrifice to remain overnight until morning.

34:26 Bring the first fruits of your land to the Temple of G-d your Lord. Do not [eat] meat cooked in milk [even that of] its own mother.

    Moses Returns with the Tablets

34:27 G-d said to Moses, 'Write these words down for yourself, since it is through these words that I have made a covenant with you and Israel.'

  8. Whenever the Bible says to do or not to do something it is a command of God, because the Bible is God's Word and God doesn't make suggestions, He gives commands. He is the King of the universe, which gives only Him that right and authority. The Scripture you are asking about is referring to the feasts that the Israelites were to have, and still have today. All of these feasts were lessons/signs/symbols of deeper spiritual truths. The redeeming of the first born of their flocks etc was a reminder of the Passover. He was also commanding the Israelites to completely wipe out the evil inhabitants of the Promised Land so that the Israelites wouldn't be swayed to follow in their footsteps and thus merit God's wrath. For the same reason they were not to make covenants or intermarry with them. Sin can and does pollute an entire civilization/culture, etc. It eventually reaches a point where God will intervene and execute his perfect and holy judgement. If He doesn't judge the USA and Canada for our sin, I think He'll Sodom and Gomorrah an apology. Obviously we have not yet reached that threshold. But I believe we are very close. Incidentally, there are more commandments to do than don't in the Bible. If we spent our time doing what we are supposed to do we wouldn't have time to worry about the don'ts. The 2 new tablets of stone contained the same 10 commandments as the first 2 tablets. Moses had also written down everything else God said.

  9. They are not "two sets". Exodus 34 seems to be focusing in on a few of the Commandments, going into the "why" of them.
