Why are they closing North Louisiana schools for 3 days?

I'm in Bossier Parish and I have a first grader who is not happy about missing school. They are closing them for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We are in the projected path of the storm but I didn't think it was supposed to get to us until Wednesday? Do the closings have something to do with the evacuations? The news didn't really specify.

I'm just a little confused. Thanks..

  1. It's now a category 4 and supposed to hit your coast Monday morning.

Aren't you watching tv? People are leaving the area by the thousands.

If you can, grab those kids and get the h*ll out!! Nagin said mandatory evacuation will begin tomorrow, Sunday. They are being told to go north into Mississippi.

  2. they need them to house the refugees from new orleans.

  3. The hurricane is the cause.  I have never heard of a school not closing for the last big holiday of the summer

  4. Gov Jindal said that the reason he's issued that order is so that the schools can provide shelter to the evacuees from New Orleans area. There are about 20,000 people (maybe around 30,000) evacuating on public transportation to north LA. They are going to use the closed schools as shelters until the aftermath is calculated. Now my concern, as I'm sure yours is, is that people were displaced for 2-4 weeks after Katrina. They can't very well expect north LA schools to close that long. So I would hope they have a back up so that the kids up there can get back to their normal schedule.
