why are people killing seals by squashing their brains out????? they take a bat or something and beat them till they die! now why do they do that oh did i also mention they do it to babies? yeah they do it! HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!

Let me say in advance I don't condone this practice in the least.  Personally, I think it's deplorable, so this is just an explanation, not support for it.

The people clubbing the seals to death are specifically out for baby fur seals.  Infants of the species have a thick, pearlescent white coat that's much sought after in the fur industry.  However, they lose this coat as they get older and build up their stores of blubber, so it has to be harvested while the seal is an infant.

That means killing the baby seal and skinning it to take the pelt.  Even more unfortunately, the baby seal gets its brains smashed out because it's the most efficient way to kill the seal (or at least immobilize it enough to skin) without damaging the pelt.

So in answer to your question, they're doing it because the fur on the wiggly little tykes is worth a lot of money, and some people aren't squeamish about bleeding defenseless lifeforms to get it.

Very few seals are killed with hakipiks any more. But when used properly the tool kills the animal quickly with out letting it suffer. It isn't a bat or a club it's a tool that has been used for hundreds of years.

It is illegal to hunt white coat ( baby harp seals) and has been since 1987. If you don't know this by now you really need to read up on your seal hunt history before you start kicking up a fuss.

The harp seal population is over 5 million strong off the coast of Newfoundand. and these animals have been hunted long before Europeans arrived. They're thriving even with a yearly hunt.

Most seals are shot but when shooting a seal there are more chances of missing.

Why do people hunt seals? Well to eat, wear their fur and use it for other products and use the oil.

The European Union is being more then a little hypocritical when they propose banning Canadian products. Many countries in Europe also hunt seals but they do not have the same tight regulations that Canada has. Politicians in Scotland are even proposing a cull of seals where fisherman would be allowed to shoot seals on a larger scale then already permitted. The seals wouldn't be used for anything like Canada does with their seals they would just die.
