For the same reason Henry Ford said you could get a Model T in any color you want as long as it's black.

Black is used because it will go with anything ... the ultimate neutral. It is probably the best -one color fits all- color of them all.

It also is darker,  this may make the screen appear brighter than it is- if not for optic reasons, for psychological ones. Or maybe its for the same reason football players put black lines under their eyes.

Because the color black would match any color of the house, be it red, green, blue, or orange.

It goes through "style" cycles, just like other appliances.  About 10 years ago, all the kitchen appliances were White on White, then stainless became big.  TVs are no different.

The real reason, not that these others are shabby answers, is that most people like to watch movies or tv in the dark, black disappears when the lights go out , and sometimes helps make the bars disappear also.
