Why are they saying plies is 31?

  1. Teams use different numbering systems for hitting.  Most teams use area 1 as 1 meter inside the antenna for the power hitter.  Area 2 is 2 meters.  Area 3 is 3 meters inside the antenna.  The setter in a 6-2 setup is usually in area 6.  The back set inside the antenna is area 9.  (This is very different from the serving zones people talk about.)  

    The first number of the 31 refers to the area.  The second number is the height of the set.  A 31 set usually goes to the power hitter well inside the antenna and very quick and low.  It will hopefully catch the blockers asleep.
