  1. Officials want to see if the players are stoned,in the pros they don't care

  2. I don't think they should be allowed by anyone at any level of competition.

If you get knocked out on the field or have a concussion, a trainer needs to be able to look into your eyes to assess any sign of brain trauma, and you can't do that with a tinted eye shield in the way. And until you have some idea of the extent of the damage, you can't remove the helmet to treat the player because of the risk from a possible neck or spinal cord injury.

  3. so the ref and coaches can identify the correct kid to the number incase some one pulls the old switch a roo.

  4. This is a player safety concern.

Trainers asked for a rule change when the really dark eyeshields became popular a few years ago.  Their concern was that when players were injured they could not see the players eyes without having to manipulate the helmet to remove the eyeshield.  At first the NFHS (the governing body that writes the rule books for HS sports) tried to allow some tinting just so long as the eyes were visible.  However this became very difficult to enforce because it was subject to a lot of interpretation so the next year the rules committee decided to eliminate all tint from eyeshields.

The NCAA has an identical rule although they did try for a couple of years to allow a medical waiver.  They found that there were so few waivers approved it was better to just eliminate the tint.

The NFL allows tinted eyeshields but there must be a medical necessity.  Last I saw, only about a dozen players were approved to wear tinted eyeshields.

  5. I did not know that they weren't.

    Good question.

Being High School - I could only guess that it is because half the kids might be high...if there was no chance of their eyes being seen.

  6. Did you hear about that guy a few years back in Pennsylvania with laser vision? Well somehow, although you would expect the opposite, his tinted visor magnified the rays and took out Ronald Reagan. That's why.

  7. I'm gonna guess concussions...
