Why are toilet flush handles always on the left side?

Because most people are right handed and when in use the flush lever is on the right side and right handed people tend to turn to the right when they stand up, so the lever is handier. Good question!

When the toilet was invented, back in the day,,,,

you ate with your right, you shook hands with your right, etc.  

you did other less than clean things with your left,,,,
