  1. Trades can occur at any time of the year. The rules just differ during the season for a couple of reasons.

    1) The non-waiver trade deadline which ended July 31. This allows trades to occur between teams as it would in the off season.

    2) The waiver trading period. Which goes from the start of August through the end of the regular season and here is a brief description of how that works.

Any player can be put on waivers by his team and doesn't need to be informed.

Other teams have the chance to claim the player during a 47 hour window.

If claimed the team that placed him on waivers has the option of pulling him back. If the team pulls him off waivers they can't trade him for 30 days.

If they do not pull him back, one of 3 things can happen.

    1) His team can work out a trade with the team that claimed him. Any player involved in the trade who is on the 40 man roster must also go through waivers first.

    2) His team can just dump his salary and contract on the team that claimed him, getting no player in return.

    3) No one claims him. His team is then free to trade him to any team.

If more than 1 team claims a player, the winning claim is awarded based on worst record or the league the claiming team is in.

Though the waiver trade deadline runs through the end of the season, a player must be traded before September 1st to be eligible to play in the Play-offs and World Series.

The waiver trade period allows teams lower in the standings to have first chance at acquiring a player or blocking the players trade to the team ahead of them in the standings.

It would be far too easy for bigger payroll teams to load up players for the play-offs if the waiver didn't exist.

  2. They are waiver trades and such.  It is a little added touch to the game to make the playoff stretch a little more interesting...

  3. 31-July is A trade deadline. There is no "no more trades" deadline, not really. Players can be traded in September -- Mike Stanton was a few years back.

Players traded after 31-July must have cleared waivers (or been claimed off waivers by the destination team). Players traded after 31-August are not eligible for postseason play.

  4. They are placing waivers on people.

That means that the waiver deadline is august first, so it is over now

  5. Wow, despite the fact this question is asked literally every 5 minutes since August 1st, it never gets old. Yup, everytime I see this question, I just think "how nice." It never, ever gets old.

  6. The contenders are buying players for the last 50 game sprint.

  7. Wavier wire
