  1. who cares??

  2. the reason they are round is a simple one ...........

its all to do with the seal and to make them water proof

if you have no corners the water will run off down if you have square ones the water has many ways of penetrating

  3. Good question but sorry i don't have a clue maybe the reason why one of the colours is red because its the colour of danger which means stop?

  4. please, who wants to read that whole excerpt from wikipedia anyway?

traffic lights are round because a circle is the most stable shape, making the light more impact proof and also more water resistant because of there being no true corners.

Traffic lights are red, yeller, and green for 3 simple reasons.

    1) red is the easiest to see other then white light.

    2) yellow was the color of the first caution signs, before they were red and white

    3) green is the international color for move or go or continue

  5. 1.  traffic loghts are round for safety and convience: if they were square and fell the sharp edges could really hurt someone.

    2. when garret morgan invented it the colors already ment something , the text elow explains it all.

Color is a silent language that affects our behavioral response in our daily lives. It can also be a learned response that can cause us to respond in a certain way based on our cultural background. For example, what would you think of a man in a pink outfit, underwear or shoes? A learned response is also responsible for the color preferences that we have through our experience of past events in our daily social life. A behavioral response on the other hand happens naturally without us being aware of it.

For example, the color red can heighten our perception of danger just by seeing it - the color of blood. It can also cause sensations of excitement and warmth - which is a color used to express love such as valentines day and the red heart to represent love.

Nevertheless, with regards to the traffic light, we all know that from our everyday experience - a learned response - that a red light means “STOP“ (and I really have to assume this since some people always fly across this red light at traffic intersection to the detriment of others), a yellow ( or amber) light means “ SLOW DOWN” - approach with caution and prepare to stop while green light means “GO” - if it is safe to do so

    GOOD LUCK:) WITH YOUR ANSWER

  6. Answers above good to a very good question.  The random questions are sometimes the best!  But why was red chosen as being for danger, therefore STOP!! ?  I think maybe it's because red is the colour of blood.  Hence danger, stop.

  7. red is the light most visable from a distance after white light, street lights etc.

as for being round i dont know.

  8. Cause they ran out of square glass ash trays years ago.

And RED, means stop, Yellow, caution and Green, Go Man Go!

  9. Others have answered the colour issue. The reason they are round is purely due to the need for efficient reflection. Light bulbs are round and the reflecter on the traffic lights are also round to ensure maximum light transmission.

  10. Why do you want to know its really random!! i have no idea i have never thought about that before is there a reason why you want to know?? but i do know the colours are called the universal colour code!!

  11. On 10 December 1868, the first traffic lights were installed outside the British Houses of Parliament in London, by the railway engineer J. P. Knight. They resembled railway signals of the time, with semaphore arms and red and green gas lamps for night use. The gas lantern was turned with a lever at its base so that the appropriate light faced traffic. Unfortunately, it exploded on 2 January 1869, injuring the policeman who was operating it.

The modern electric traffic light is an American invention. As early as 1912 in Salt Lake City, Utah, policeman Lester Wire invented the first red-green electric traffic lights. On 5 August 1914, the American Traffic Signal Company installed a traffic signal system on the corner of 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. It had two colours, red and green, and a buzzer, based on the design of James Hoge, to provide a warning for colour changes. The design by James Hogeallowed Police and Fire stations to control the signals in case of emergency. The first four-way, three-colour traffic light was created by police officer William Potts in Detroit in 1920. In 1923, Garrett Morgan patented a traffic signal device, although it was not a precursor of the modern traffic light. Ashville, Ohio claims to be the location of the oldest working traffic light in the United States, used at an intersection of public roads until 1982 when it was moved to a local museum.

The first interconnected traffic signal system was installed in Salt Lake City in 1917, with six connected intersections controlled simultaneously from a manual switch. Automatic control of interconnected traffic lights was introduced March 1922 in Houston, Texas. The first automatic experimental traffic lights in England were deployed in Wolverhampton in 1927.

Ampelmännchen pedestrian traffic signals have come to be seen as a nostalgic sign for the former German Democratic Republic.

The color of the traffic lights representing stop and go are likely derived from those used to identify port (red) and starboard (green) in maritime rules governing right of way, where the vessel on the left must stop for the one crossing on the right.

  12. You can have some info in the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_lig... .

And yes, you will find here that some traffic lights are not round (for the colour blind)
