  2. The former Great Western Railway in the U.K. categorised its vehicles for use in repairing the "Permanent Way" (track) by names of fish. This made it much easier for site engineers to order the correct type of wagon. A "Dogfish" was a four-wheeled hopper wagon for delivering stone ballast. I believe that a "Salmon" was a flatbed wagon with two four-wheeled bogies used for carrying signal posts. There were also "Pike", "Sole" and "Turbot". All these were freight wagons: passenger carrying vehicles were not given fish names. These names were adopted by other railways.
