Question:

Why are trans fats still legal?

I just bought a can of Contadina "tomato paste product" at a convenience store and when I got home I noticed in the list of ingredients that it contains partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. I am pissed. Why do food vendors insist upon sneaking this toxic ingredient into foods for human consumption?

  1. Somewhere underneath it all, it's more or less the same reason you bought "tomato paste product" instead of tomatoes. They give good shelf life, are inexpensive, and aren't bad, if you limit your consumption. The companies that sell these things, though, aren't your mama, and it's up to you to control how much of what you eat. You can trade health for convenience, or even be a glutton, if you wish; and griping about the evil company selling you the stuff is simply displacement.

  2. This is a question of the ethics of those companies.  They value their money over the health of people.

FYI, in USA a food label can list no trans fats and still have 0.4g of trans fats legally.  If the ingredients lists hydrogenated oils than the product contains trans fats.  Please keep this in mind.

  3. Because they are cheap, and we've been using them for quite a while. They're actually in the process of being banned in many areas, but that takes time. You can't very well tell corporations to just stop immeadiately and convert all their sourcing and production over to an alternative, unless you wish to bankrupt a lot of companies. Some companies honestly didn't know, and are working more quickly to change over (or already have). Others are scumbags. Also, trans fats are definitely not good for you, but a few more grams of the stuff won't kill you either. A crisis, it is not.

  5. The same reason selling milk filled with hormones and titty pus is still legal as well. I personally think that the food and medical industry work hand-in-hand to poison people (namely the poor who can't afford to eat healthy foods) so they can all get rich. God bless America.

  6. I'm in total agreement with Optimist!
