i had to put my shar pei in today to get 2 moles removed from her left hind leg as they were getting big as she started to chew on them, its going to cost between $500 and $550 just to cut 2 moles off i think this is well over priced so i asked the vet to break it right down into where and what the money was being spent on

they are even charging me for swabs 70 cents each isn't that silly so of course the more my dog bleeds the more swabs they will need to use.

and its cost $250 for the anaesthetic for her to be under for 45 minutes

what do you think?

  1. It depends on the vet too.  Because we used to take our dogs to a different vet than the one we have now.  We weren't nearly as happy, they cost a lot and they always seemed to come back with fleas.  We started looking around at other vets and found one we really liked, and were shocked when for the same type of visits, the cost was almost half as much.  We love our vets we have now.  You can tell they truly care about the animals they treat.  I think maybe have a look around at other vet's offices and see if you can find a good one that is more reasonably priced.  I've never gotten that detailed of a charge of every little thing for any procedure, that's a little crazy.

  2. Go ask your doctor how much you would have been charged for similar treatment for yourself and the vet bill will look like a bargain. I know, I know, it can be expensive. I just paid $200 today for an exam, some antibiotic and tapeworm meds for my cat. Vets have to pay for similar schooling to human doctors, and then they have to buy and operate their own hospital too. They have to be the GP, surgeon, anaesthetist, and pharmacist for anything that walks on four legs or flies. Your human doctor only needs to know about people, who rarely try to bite their doctors, though I have to admit I've been tempted a time or two.

  3. Always ask the cost before you drop off the dog, then ask another vet too before you drop off the dog.  A small office fee to compare vets could save you $250 dollars.

I think they are charging twice as much as most vets.  It seems worth it to drive to the next town if you must to get another vet.  Leave your local vet without explaining so you can still go there if you must for an emergency someday.

    Drop him without a word.

  4. everything is getting more expensive these days

  5. That is absolutely ridiculous. However, vets are becoming more and more like doctors, they can charge what they want for their services. That is causing a problem with pet owners, fewer are taking their animals to the vet for annual exams and when they are sick. Try calling around to different vets in the area and get more estimates. I know the anesthesia is not worth  $250, that's just way too much.

  6. I guess they have done the hard yards, spent years studying to get their degrees.  People are also expecting more from their Vets, they expect them to have all the best facilities and equipment and that costs.

It is a user pays society and that is part of the expense of having a dog.  I guess there is always the option of dog health insurance to help offset the costs.
