  2. There are seven characteristics that are critical to life.

    Sensitivity, breathing, movement, growth, feeding, excretion and reproduction.

    Viruses reproduce and grow, but only within a host cell. They don't feed, breathe or excrete waste, and they don't move as such, but just float around. They only exhibit two of the characteristics, and they are not independent. That's why viruses are seen as nonliving.
