Why are we SO accepting of cooky-ness?

Vegans, life-coaches, healing ceremonies, burying one's own child's placenta in a garden to fertilize it...

Why doesn't anyone realize that society is going nuts?

  1. There is nothing cooky about that.  Actually, i think up tight people are cooky because they never know how to have fun or try anything new.

  2. If cooky-ness was outlawed there'd be no more religion.

  3. None of this is new.  We've been kooky for centuries, we just didn't have the internet to let us know what everybody and their neighbor was doing.

  4. society does not goes nuts, it is getting rich and arrogant...It is we are, creators of all of it going nuts serving or denying that bubbles. Join the club. Never heard about placenta in a garden... insanity would be very creative too...yea ...future prognosis is not very bright

  5. Because the alternative is have someone decide what is acceptable.  Pretty nice if you are the one deciding, but pretty ugly if you are the one who is "unacceptable"

  6. To paraphrase Krishnamurti:  "It is no measure of mental health to be well-adjusted in a Society that is profoundly f*cked up."

But, as others have said, this is nothing new.  It's just that it gets a lot more press than it once did.  And it's true that people are fascinated by anything 'strange' or 'different' so they watch such things on the news.  And -that- pushes the news ratings up and the broadcasters make more money.

If you -really- want to know what's happening, always follow the bucks ☺

  7. ah. That question isn't really a question because there isn't an answer. Any answer would be baised on assumption, nuturing, variety of any kind of person.

Besides there is not one acceptence of what the word  cookyness means.

  8. To you it may be nuts but all of these things are culturally significant and have been present in many cultures all over the world predating history.

Modern American culture has recently started accepting differences in other cultures and some celebrate these. You may not find any value in such practices, and that is quite all right, but others certainly have the right to express their desires and needs.

Try to keep an open mind. To some people, your practices seem nuts.

  9. Hmm, I thought it was going more un-nuts.

  10. And this from a chick who eats crayons!?

Seriously ... I think we accept it because so many of us have no experiences that seem meaningful, so few rituals that we take for granted as meaningful, that we really understand the search for meaning that such kooky pursuits represent. When we haven't got a way to draw a crisp line between bizarre acts and meaningful rituals, we know better than to pass judgment harshly. So we just snicker up our sleeve. And wish we did have meaningful rituals to believe in, or could pretend as well as those kooks can.

  11. Society is not necessarily "going" nuts as it is showing us the same percentage of craziness just in a larger population.
