  1. Well it depends. For example, if you just had surgery (depending on what type of surgery) they may start you on a clear diet or liquid diet. If not contraindicated they will then start giving you soft diet. After that then you start eating regular diet. Generally speaking the idea is to make sure that you are able to tolerate the foods that they are giving you without causing any nausea or vomiting which may lead to other problems such as dehydration. Hope my answer was helpful. Good luck...Donna from Los Angeles, CA.

  2. A soft diet is easier to digest.  Also, it makes it easier to use the bathroom.  Often after surgeries they don't want you to strain when you use the bathroom causing more problems so they put you on an easily digestible diet.

  3. Our body is weak, and soft food is obviously easier to swallow and digest than solid.  We lose our appetite anyway, but we still have to eat. It's better than nothing.

Another possible reason is that oftentimes we tend to throw up, and soft is easier to expel.

  4. Slowly to prepare for more solid stuff. To make sure we don't reject the food and in the process makes is more sick.

Yes makes us weaker! I was once hospitalized for tonsilitis. I cry every time the meals come. They fed me jellies and gooey stuff and everyone else around me have less hospital-like food - sinigang, tinola, etc and they are just too sick to touch it! Not fair!
