Why are state and local governments not investing in public transportation. Aside from easing our dependence on gas and oil, we can also reduce pollution and lose some weight.

  1. My pesonal view is, because they make so much money from the taxes on fuel, they will never subsidise an effective public transport alternative.

  2. In most areas of the U.S. people would not use it. The only way it would be viable, would be to force people to use it. When the government attempts to force the people to do so they may find themselves in the middle of an open revolt.

  3. Because spoiled Americans dont want it....we think we are too good for that!!  Can you imagine asking to soccer mom in the burbs to take the bus to a game!!!  She would just gag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. In some places the private industry has lobbied against it.  I know of at least one tourist area where the rental car companies made sure there are no public buses.

Our government used to be for the people, by the people. Now our government is for the corporate profit and by the corporate profits.

    Good Luck...

  5. think about this question. keep in mind the profit also  keep in mind how a consumer thinks about that! makes sense right

  6. The interests that benefit from the use of gas (oil companies, auto companies, etc.) have been able to lobby against any expansion of public transit.  For example, if a city proposes building a rail line to go to the airport, the companies that run the parking lots at the airport will oppose it.
