Both computer monitors and tv's are going wide for one reason and that's the move from standard def TV to high def.

Hi def is a wide screen format. So HD cable and Sat TV, hi def blu ray etc are pushing this trend.

This is a good question.  

The reason wide screen is preferable, is because your vision is largely horizontal.  Think about it.  You can see much more to the left and right of you that you can see up and down.  Early humans needed to be aware of the surroundings of their landscape more than they needed to be concerned with the sky above.  This peripheral vision allowed early man to see any predators or prey while he was out wandering and hunting.
