  1. They don't have to be open.  Its pretty much up to the person sitting next to the window.  Out of courtesy, most window-sitters simply leave them open so others can see what's out there... but not always. The shade is just a simple pull-tab and comes down quite easily... and there are no rules governing where they have to be.

  2. *drink*

  3. Well so you can have a nice view of what's going on and in case of an emergency, you know what's out there. It courteous to leave it open so others can see, unfortunately most of the people I sat next to left there's closed so they can sleep. And that was during the whole flight. Pretty annoying in my opinion.

  4. So that in the event the cabin fills with smoke,

    1. It will provide extra light

    2. Rescue crews can see whats going on inside

    3. The Cabin Crew can better evacuate the plane because they can see which exits have fire on the outside

  5. So that you can have a good view of outside and you can react well in case of emergencies

  6. This has been asked at least twice before.  It is best to have them open.  In case of crash it will aid in seeing potential hazards on the outside of the plane and could save some lives.
