Why are winds aloft forecasts called "FDs"?

  1. Forecast Direction

    The estimated winds and temperature for selected levels.


  2. "F" is for "Forecast," as in "FA."

    I thought "D" was for "winD"--but maybe Get a Grip is right in saying "Direction."

  3. They are not abbreviations of anything.  All weather products were assigned coded letters like that.  FD simply got to be the winds aloft's name.

    WS= Sigmets

    WA=Airmets

    WST=Convective Sigmets

    CWA=Center Weather Advisory

    WW=Severe Weather Watch Bulletin

    You know what a METAR, TAF, and NOTAM are.

  4. Winds aloft forecast are designated by either "FD or "FB"

    These reports are  known as "FD" in the US, but are becoming known as "FB", following the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) nomenclature.

    simply put ,it is the product code for the textual winds aloft forecast.
