It's our confidence, basically.  The fact that we are already happy by ourselves are the basis to making them happy.

The answer would be in the last part of your question "biological instinct to survive".  Men want this too, which is why the judge women on their appearance.  Though seen as shallow, one's looks tell a lot about one's health.
