Question:

Why are women´s magazines so bad?

They are mostly adverts, s**y women and pictures of shoes and really expensive clothes which take up the whole page. Very little reading material. Anyone else really disappointed with the quality and the fact that they are a con ?

  1. I don't read womens mags any more cos they're quite two-faced! They complain when a celeb has put on a few extra pounds and they also make a big deal about it when they're a couple pounds too thin - there is no winning! Also, they like to make it seem like their mag is for 'real women' and then they go and airbrush everything and make us real girls feel like we're not normal cos we don't have the perfect skin or body that we see in the mags! They are partly to blame for girls having so many hang-ups about their bodies!!

  2. These magazines (CosmoGirl, 17, Young Ms. etc) are all a sham. They're designed and produced and marketed by the industrial machine that produces fashion and cosmetics. If you can hook them young, you'll have them for life. That's the motto of these industries.

So, young girls are taught to value their sexual appeal over their intellectual ability and integrity. They are taught that a simple 8 question quiz will give them the answers to their questions, causing a marked lack of intellectual curiosity among young women, and thereby promote a societal attitude towards females as being useful only if they are beautiful.

Beauty connotes sexual privilege in these magazines, so those who do not fit the mold of beauty that the magazines display end up feeling sexually worthless, and in many cases go to extreme ends to prove otherwise (promiscuity and other self-hating behaviors). Some take to self-mutilation (anorexia, bulimia, cutting) because they believe wholeheartedly that they are not worthy of anyone's attention.

When these magazines tell the truth (that all girls/young women are valuable as they are) the fashion and cosmetics industries will lose money. So expect the magazines to continue lying. Money talks. s*x sells. And young women continue to suffer as a result.

  3. Too many anorexic women featured inside on the covers and too many articles about s*x.  Many of these magazines try and make you feel inadequate about yourself.  I don't read any of them.  I think they're full of c**p.

  4. Women's magazines are so bad because so many women will spend good money on bad magazines.  Depressing, isn't it?  I usually only read them when I'm at the hairdressers and I'd swear I've been reading the same one for the past 20 years, give or take a few advances in cosmetic treatments for them to cover.  Does anyone have any suggestions for reading that doesn't involve an active assault on women's self-esteem?

  5. Yh ur rite. Theres so many of them and they r all the same. They arer afraid of being unique  in case sum1 mite not buy them.

Coz tehers too many of them.

  6. nnn

  7. I agree! Especially those expensive mags (Vogue, Cosmo etc) where you have to turn 40 pages of advertising before you get to a subject. If they make so much money from advertisers why does the mag cost $4+?

I don't buy them anymore I just go on line.

  8. i like all the cheap ones with all the weird stories - i think they're sposed to be for older women e.g. take a break, chat. Once i read a story called "a sheep bit off my leg" - i brought the magazine JUST for that article lol.

  9. I agree ...I used to love magazines but I'm so bored with the "fashion" and "beauty" pages ...and the hypocrisy.

I do, however, LOVE O, Oprah's magazine.  It is packed with indepth, intelligent articles and they're not just half a page of fluff amongst $1000 shoes.

As I read it, I turn down the page if I want to refer to it again eg if there's a book recommended that I fancy.  When I'm done with O I always have a LOT of pages turned down.

    It's grown up!
