  1. Worms act like mini "farmers" as they are constantly moving the soil from the bottom towards the top, therefore, aerating the soil. The worms eat the soil and as it moves through their digestive tracts the soil is slightly changed-earth worms both lighten the clay content of the soil and improve the nutritive content of the soil.

  2. worms eat dirt.

  3. They turn the soil and eat rotting material and turn that into worm castings, one of the best all purpous fertilzers on the planet

  4. Aeration and castings.

  5. Worms are great for too many reasons to mention here but they aerate the soil – eat the micro-organisms that are feeding on decaying matter (and inadvertently eat soil, which they need to grind up their food in their gizzard(s)) – the end result – worm p**p – is the best fertilizer you can have. Gardeners call it ‘Black Gold’.

Their p**p is covered with lignin – a sticky type substance that keeps soil particles at the right distance from each other – hence, creating proper water/air proportions and since their p**p is encased it acts like a slow release fertilizer which there can never be too much of. It is full of nutrients and fauna that help plants fight off disease.

Worm p**p can not burn the roots of your plants as can happen with chemical fertilizers.

I think it was Darwin who said there isn’t a single spec of soil on this planet that hasn’t been through the digestive tract of a worm. They deserve much more credit and respect than they get. The more worms you encourage to populate your garden soil the bigger, brighter, healthier plants you will have.

‘Google’ – worm castings, vermiculture, vermicompost, black gold, worm castings tea – and you will find endless reasons for the need of worms in our soil.

  6. First of all worms do NOT eat dirt.

Worms eat bacteria, fungi and protozoa and they love organic matter such as plants, fruit, compost heaps of cut grass, potato peelings and decaying animals.

Worms are essential in gardens because they keep the soil soft and full of nutrients which are good for your plants. They are a sign of healthy ground.

  7. Worms aerate the soil.

  8. This is not a joke, but it's the worm p**p...it's the best compost ever!
