  1. They had to call themselves something to set them aside from all the other sects.

  2. Jesus said: “By their fruits you will recognize them.” (Matt. 7:16) In other words, it would be by what they do.

    IDENTIFYING MARKS OF TRUE RELIGION

    GENUINE LOVE AMONG ITS MEMBERS. “By this all will know that you are my disciples,” said Jesus Christ. “if you have love among yourselves.”—John 13:35.

    RESPECT FOR GOD’S WORD. “Your word is truth,” said Jesus in prayer to his heavenly Father.—John 17:17.

    KEEPING GOD’S NAME SACRED. Jesus taught his genuine followers to pray: “Our Father in heaven, may your name be held holy.” (Matt. 6:9, “The Jerusalem Bible”) Jesus also said in prayer: “I have made your name known to them [the disciples] and will make it known.” (John 17:26) Certainly he made known the sacred name, Jehovah.—Ps. 83:18.

    PROCLAIMING THE KINGDOM OF GOD. Jesus foretold that his disciples would fulfill this prophetic command: “And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.”—Matt. 24:14.

    KEEPING SEPARATE FROM THE WORLD AND BEING NEUTRAL IN ITS POLITICAL AFFAIRS. “The form of worship that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: . . . to keep oneself without spot from the world.”—Jas. 1:27.

  3. It's based on a Bible verse taken out of context. Just like Baptists call themselves Baptist, not Christians.They base it on the fact John the Baptist was the forerunner for Christ.In the Bible, followers of Christ were only ever called Christians.

  4. I think JW's don't believe Christ is the path to salvation-hence the no "Christian" term.  Don't quote me though.....

  5. see 4 u'r self.. look at link below...

  6. Contrary to popular belief.....Jehovah's Witnesses ARE Christians.  Just another denomination, like Baptists, Catholics, Nazarenes, Methodists......

  7. For the same reason that others are called Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Catholics, Quakers, Disciples of Christ, Church of God, etc.

  8. Jehovah's Witnesses is a cult

  9. I believe that would be discrimination against them. They are no less Christians then Catholics or Protestants.

  10. They are called Jehovah's Witnesses because they do not want to be associated with any Christian church in the United States or in the world.

    The Witnesses are a cult, one that does not believe in the deity of Christ and they would rather follow the Old Testament and call themselves Jehovah's Witnesses than Jesus' witnesses.

    Their doctrine is of the Watchtower Organization and they are not allowed to believe what the organization does not teach, even if it is biblical.

  11. Philip.2:5,9-12;

    To imitate Jesus is Christian, Jesus was the greatest witness for his God and Father who is our God and Father, John 20:17; Rev.1:1-3,5; 3:14; Jesus said, "hallowed be thy name," Jesus prayed for those given him by God to be with him where he was and he gave them his fathers name John 17:1-26; Rev.14:1-6,7; Gen.22:14; Exo.3:6; 17:15; Judges 6:24; Psm.68:4; 83:18; Isa.12:2; 26:4; So his name was known by the holy prophets and apostles 2Pet.3:2; Our Lord and Savior Jesus, 1Cor.15:22-28,51-53;

    Year 2513, O.T. next 1110 years, 39 books, many write, done 443 BC.

    New Testament 50 to 100 years after Christ, 27 books, many write.

    The KJV Bible published 397 years ago, has been an excepted translation 97 years, and JHVH or any other [ Hebrew, Armaic or Greek ], that meant Jehovah, was translated from is now law of the land and law of God.

    To be christian is to know the bible and the kingdom  of the world around us and the kingdom of God, Luke 16:16,17; and to know what part of this world that Jesus was no part of, John 18:36;

    What is the kingdom of the heavens and the kingdom of God and who can count the number of times this is mentioned in the four Gospels,

    and why is it said there will be [ 2Pet.3:13; Isa.65:17; Rev.21:1-5 ]; a new heavens and a new earth when most religions teach heaven or h**l?

    Should God not even have a name to modern people? He did have a name in the bible, as to the bible people.

  12. Oh boy...

    Where's Vot when she's needed?

  13. Hi there,

    I've used this answer in past responses to similar questions, so I'll post it again:

    Unfortunately, the Jehovah Witness faith is a cult. Most of them are the most loving, sincere people you will ever meet. They will call themselves Christians. However, there are differences between JWs and Christianity that are huge.

    Probably the biggest difference is this: JWs believe that Jesus Christ was not God. They do not believe in the trinity (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit). They believe that Jesus was created as Michael the Archangel and is God's Son. It's taught that He is our mediator to God (Jehovah).

    Christians believe that Jesus is God. "I am the Alpha and Omega, who is and was and who is to come, the Almighty." (Revelation 1:8)

    Look at Genesis 1:26. It states, "Then God said, 'Let US make man in OUR image, according to OUR likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea...'"

    Look at John 1:1. The JW bible says, "In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was with God and the Word was A God."

    The Christian bible says, "In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was with God and the Word was God."

    Leaving that last "A" out before "God" is a huge issue.

    Unfortunately, I have to run, so I'll make the rest of this quick.

    JWs believe that ONLY 144,000 are going to heaven. For the rest, they remain on the earth. They call this group on earth, "A great multitude." Read Revelation 1:9. It says, "After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands..." They describe this group as being on earth, not in heaven. Move forward to Revelation 19:1. "After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in HEAVEN..."

    It seems me that that great multitude is standing before the throne of God IN HEAVEN!

    I don't know about you, but I cannot wait to be in the presence of God (in all three forms) in heaven. I strive to hear nothing more than, "Well done my good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:21).

    The fact of the matter is this...JWs do not believe in the diety of Jesus Christ.  Without recognizing this, they cannot be saved.  Jesus Christ is one in the same of God the Father and God the Holy Spirit!

    Please look at the link below. It will answer any questions to the fundamental differences between Jehovah's Witnesses and Christianity.

    God bless!

  14. JW is a denomination. They are Christians also. JW is just a type of Christian.

  15. I think she wants to know what makes them "Witnesses" and why they use Jehovah and not Jesus?

  16. It's probably for the same reason that Baptists are not called Methodists.

    And some people DO call JW's Christian.  (I think the people who call them that are the megachristianites.)

  17. Because we are "witnesses" TESTIFYING as to Jehovah's glory & sovreignty.

    Isaiah calls his followers "witnesses" of him. (*Jehovah God*)

    We are indeed Christian, as we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord & Savior.

  18. I'm not a Jehovahs witness, but I imagine it's because they are not "Christians".

  19. JWs are Christians. They're just a different kind of Christian. Like Catholics, Mormons, Baptists... all Christians.

    Usually a friendlier kind.

    Peace.
