i have bought a new car today but i struggled to find one with tax. i dont mint taxing my car but to tax a new one i need to change over my insurance and wait for the cover note to be able to tax it. as i couldnt afford to be without a car for a few days i had to buy one that was taxed. so my question is should you be allowed a few days grace where you can drive without tax, say one week from the date you buy it. after the week you would be prosicuted as normal

  1. Because everyone would capitalise on it and try their best to get a couple of days out of it every year.

Why don't you just accept that laws exist and you have to, one day, obey them!!!!!

  2. It is a good question because it is a problem many people have faced.

The official line, i guess, would be that as a car can be taxed 2 weks before expiry of the current disc people have enough time. That does not help people like you.

It does seem to me that, if the government were interested, why dont they produce a 7 day combined tax and 3rd party insurance ' TaxIn' stamp that you could buy at the post office by just producing a valid mot certificate. That would solve the problem for people in your position, and do away with the thousands who would just take a chance and drive it home untaxed and uninsured.

  3. Maybe you have a point ?  as its a ball ache

I own 3 cars and a van  and  its £££

I can only drive one at a time

I would rather pay one tax rate for my  driving license

I think this is what the American do ?

Thing is ...  its  just another UK  TAX !!

Sadly  its the LAW  and  why should you have any grace

If you need a car desperate,  I would HIRE one as its cheap as chips,   and buy a motor that I wanted  and not just " cos it was taxed "

You could tax it online, and  then you still would be legal for insurance,  just that the cops would do you for NOT displaying a legal current disc

  4. Well you obviously have a computer and most of what you want is available online.

So, day one, sight new car, place deposit and contact insurance company by phone to change details.

Day two, apply for new tax online, car will already be registered with MID, and the tax will be valid from date of purchase.

Day three at the latest, pay for and collect car.

Why do you need a grace period.

  5. " Greed"

  6. you can have up to a month but you cant drive it on the road

  7. the guy king is right its all computerised now so no need to wait like a lemon!

  8. If you can, I would really recommend taxing your car on-line. It must be one of the only government web sites that actually does whats it's meant to do and pretty d**n efficiently (it's taking your money after all)

You shouldn't have to wait for an insurance cover note these days, as it is all registered on the national database along with the MOT details.

I have changed my insurance over from one car to another on-line and then gone straight to the DVLA site and taxed it. It's pretty scary how much info they have and how quickly it can be updated, but saying that it's the only national database I agree with.

But, if you haven't internet access, then I'm afraid as in so many ways these days, your stuffed.

  9. Try to have as much information as you could perhaps is one of the options, however it is labor consuming, here is the place i have ever had good experience with.http://car-insurance.easyideas4u.info/ca...

  10. Because every man and his dog would be driving about in cars with no tax and saying "I only bought it yesterday - honest!"

Play by the rules, like the rest of us have to.
