Why aren't book lovers called bookheads, not bookworms?

We are named after the little insects that devour books I don't mind what they call me cos once I get my nose in a book I switch off and don't hear anyone!

I just don't know. Bookworm doesn't make any sense at all.

Because bookworms (the lit. worms) eat their way through a book, from cover to cover, and someone who likes to read consumes a book as voraciously as a worm.

Because then you couldn't have a cute little worm with glasses as a mascot at the library, lol.
