Question:

Why aren't my component cables working?

I recently purchased a HTIB (Home-theater-in a-box) system, and when setting up, realized my TV (Toshiba 24AF42) had inputs for S-Video and Component cables. So I bought a set of cables and connected the TV to the DVD player. Unfortunately, no picture comes up at all. Does anyone know why this is the case? If it helps, the component cables are Philips "24K Gold series", that also came with stereo audio cables (I didn't use the audio ones since my DVD player's hooked up to the speaker system). More information about the TV can be found here: http://reviews.cnet.com/direct-view-tvs-crt/toshiba-24af42/4507-6481_7-20680037.html

  1. Assuming you have the red/green/blue RCA plugs in the right jacks, I can think of two possibilities:

    1) make sure you have the TV input set for the right input jacks (eg component 1); and,

    2) verify the DVD player is set (via its menu) for component output (players usually default to composite (yellow RCA) output). Note, you will need to connect the player via composite to a TV to see the menu.

I'll bet it's one or the other (or both) of the above.

  2. tv guy is on the money! buti hope you meant you hooked the DVD to the tv input red green blue!

  3. On the TV, you need to change the input source to Component1 or component2.
