Why aren't the contestants of Big Brother allowed to sing?

Because BB would then have to pay royalties to whoever owns the rights to the songs

If it's a song that's already out there, then BB has to pay if it is showed on-air.

If it's a song that the housemate made-up, then they can sing it.

If it's a song that BB has already played, during a task or as wake-up music, etc, then they can also sing that song.

Essentially, they ARE allowed to sing, but if it's a copyrighted song, then they can't show it on television, unless they've paid for it.

Because then they will have to pay royalties to whoever made the song. It's mainly Dan that sings. lol.

They really should know better by this point.
