Why aren't there any alloys of iron and aluminium?

  1. Aluminum is not expensive. If it were you wouldn't be able to buy aluminum foil now would you?

    Iron does form an alloy...with carbon. it's called Steel.  

    Aluminum forms alloys as well. Just google aluminum alloys


  2. there are limits.u cannot mix Al and Fe about 50-50.like mixing oil and water

  3. In fact there is.

    Most aluminium alloys contain iron in <1%.

    Lot of other metals are added to aluminium in small amounts (<0.1%). These metals including iron helps to improve the properties of the alloy, so it is more durabe and can be work hardened.

  4. Iron is cheap and strong, but heavy.

    Aluminium is light and strong, but expensive.

    Mix them together and you get something that is strong, but expensive and heavy. That's not really a winning combination.

    Edit: obscurusvita, there's a big difference between buying a roll of aluminium foil at the supermarket, and buying enough to build the framework of a skyscreaper.
