  1. I do believe that it is too dry for them. Because I used to live in Ohio and we had them and then later I moved to Texas and we didn't (maybe too dry and hot) and then I lived in Oklahoma and we had them in abundance last summer (and some the summers before) when it was cool and moist.

EDIT: I got this from National Geographic

There are about 2,000 firefly species. These insects live in a variety of warm environments, as well as in more temperate regions, and are a familiar sight on summer evenings. Fireflies love moisture and often live in humid regions of Asia and the Americas. In drier areas, they are found around wet or damp areas that retain moisture.

  2. colorado is too dry.. and the area is in a higher elevation than illinois.. fireflies feed on water and live in wet areas..

  3. Katie is correct. Fireflies can only live in areas of the country where the humidity is high. Colorado, Texas (and California where I live) are all entirely too dry. The South, Great Lakes Area and other "muggy" places all have them. I remember trying to bring a jar full of them home from Tenn. years ago, but they died some place in Texas on the way home.
